Youth swimmers in the area won’t be the only ones starstruck Thursday afternoon, as Toronto Raptors center Greg Stiemsma will be in town for a clinic at the Sanford Pentagon.
In conjunction with Sanford POWER Basketball Academy director Allan Bertram, Stiemsma will put on a clinic for players looking to make plays in the paint. The “Greg Stiemsma Post Camp,” calling on the 6-foot-11 center’s prowess in the paint, will focus on post moves, rebounding and footwork.
The clinic — which runs from 1 to 4 p.m. — is open to athletes grades 7 to 12. Registration is still open; the cost is $35. On Friday, Stiemsma will host a camp in White River.
“We are excited to bring in a proven NBA center to work with our athletes at the Pentagon,” said Bertram in a Sanford Pentagon press release. “Greg has done a tremendous job at the professional level and is someone who works well with athletes in teaching them the important aspects of post play.”
The former Wisconsin Badger has a Sioux Falls connection after earning defensive player of the year honors for the D-League Skyforce in 2010. He’s also spent time with the Boston Celtics, Minnesota Timberwolves and New Orleans Pelicans, before appearing in 17 games with the Raptors last season.
Other upcoming Sanford POWER events include a running back clinic hosted by Detroit Lions running back (and South Dakota State standout) Zach Zenner, held July 21 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Sanford Fieldhouse.
Another ex-Jackrabbit trying to carve a pro career, Nate Wolters, will host a camp at the Pentagon Aug. 4 (and another camp Aug. 5 at Frost Arena in Brookings).
