Mother Nature brought heavy rains and lightning to Monroe on Friday but Neville finished the sprig strong anyway. The Neville football team concluded spring practice with the Black & Gold Game at Bill Ruple Stadium on Friday with Black winning 13-7.
After nearly an hour long delay, the electricity moved from the skies above to the field below. Neville played first-teamers against each other and so down the depth chart with four, 10-minute quarters.
Neville coach Mickey McCarty was pleased that his team was able to battle through the wet conditions.
“(The weather) is just part of it,” McCarty said. “It was good for us to add (the wet conditions) and have us handle wet balls.”
The main goal of any team in the spring is to find ways to improve from the year before. McCarty believes the team got better at every position in some way.
“We still have work to do at every position,” McCarty said. “Our guys responded well to everything we asked them to do.”
Black took the lead when wide receiver Chris Fuller made an acrobatic catch near the back of the end zone in the fourth quarter Friday. Bobby Newton had initially scored to get the Gold team ahead 7-0 in the first quarter. Running back Donald Jenkins then scored on a 10-yard run to tie things up. Both sides had some offensive problems with two interceptions and a missed field goal by each team. We made strides at linebacker and defensive line, and offensive line. We have some size there.”
De’Vonta Mathis and Ben Nola got interceptions on defense for the Gold.
A pair of former Tigers were back on campus Friday to take in the spring game. Current LSU wide receiver and former Neville star John Diarse was on hand. Former Neville linebacker and current Central Arkansas linebacker Rickey Wyatt was also on the sideline. Diarse’ younger brother, Josh Diarse, is a starting wide receiver and kick returner for Neville. The younger Diarse will be a junior in 2015.
