For the second time in four games, Neville felt out its opponent for one quarter and put them away in the second.
The Tigers scored 30 points in the second quarter en route to a 51-13 win over Carroll.
Neville (4-0) led just 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, but ended the quarter 12 plays into a 16-play, 97-yard touchdown drive that lasted 7 minutes and 21 seconds. Quarterback Jaiden Cole ended the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run, his second of the game.
Cole’s first score came on a 22-yard run just four minutes into the game and ended the game with three rushing touchdowns. Running back Donald Jenkins scored two touchdowns, both on the ground, in the first half to complete a dominating Neville run game.
The Tigers gained 182 of their 258 first-half yards on the ground.
Neville continued to run the ball well in the second half with some reserve players, as Jontavious Woods and Payton Batteford both scored in the second half.
Carroll tested Neville’s secondary with long throws multiple times throughout the game and converted on one in early in the third quarter, as Marcus Bruce caught Odirrius Sellers’ pass and took it 83 yards for a touchdown.
The Bulldogs’ other score came on a 3-yard quarterback sneak from Sellers to complete a 14-play scoring drive that featured one third-down conversion and one fourth-down conversion.
Return men: In a game with 64 combined points, the offenses were not the only ones earning yards in bunches. Neville cornerback Corey Straughter had a solid night as a punt returner, returning one for 49 yards to put the Tigers in the red zone.
Carroll’s Fantoryian Pendleton had a 40-yard kick return of his own. The Bulldogs took the ball at the 45-yard line and went on to score their second touchdown of the night off of Pendleton’s kick return.
Injury report: Quarterback Chris Haynes, part of the two-quarterback rotation with Cole, did not play against Carroll. Haynes was on the sidelines but not wearing shoulder pads.
Up next: Neville has an open week coming up before the first district 2-4A game of the season at the Bastrop Rams. Carroll returns home to face General Trass.
