The Cooper Buick GMC High School Hero of the Week for Week 3 is Neville quarterback Jaiden Cole, although calling him just a quarterback may not be doing him justice.
The all-around athlete ran for 208 yards and touchdowns on 15 carries and threw a 29-yard touchdown pass in Neville’s 43-35 win over Ouachita last week. Cole also has a receiving touchdown to his name.
Cole received 1,082 of the 3,117 total votes (34.71 percent), followed closely by Ouachita quarterback Devion Warren’s 908 votes (29.13 percent). Also in the running were West Monroe running back Trey Coleman, Ouachita Christian running back Josh Pennebaker and Sterlington’s DeVante Douglas.
The News-Star: Last year, you started at strong safety. This year, you’ve had a game where you threw a touchdown pass, ran for a touchdown and caught a touchdown. Could you have ever seen your role on this team transforming that drastically?
Jaiden Cole: Yeah, I’ve seen it coming. Coming out of junior high, I was playing quarterback, and coming into my sophomore year, we had JT Jackson and they said they just needed my talents on the field somewhere. That position (strong safety) just happened to work.
TNS: Do you prefer the thrill of knocking somebody out on defense or the thrill of scoring offense?
JC: Right now, it’s the thrill of scoring.
TNS: Has it always been that way, or did you enjoy defense?
JC: Once I got in the groove, it became habit. It was fun having those veteran guys out there on the field with you. It became fun.
TNS: Do you miss defense?
JC: Sometimes. Sometimes I’m watching the guys on the sideline, watching them make plays and wishing I could be out there with them.
TNS: Does it make practice more fun, going up against the guys you used to play defense with?
JC: Yes sir. They bring a big challenge, there’s a lot of competitiveness.
