Center Lilly Hatton won the tip-off to start overtime, and from there her team outscored New Albany 14-1 in the extra period, finishing a 57-44 victory Thursday night.
North Harrison struggled to hang close all game after losing the lead early in the second quarter. Getting to the line kept the team in the game, as eight players scored 27 points from the foul line.
That, added onto New Albany’s 18 turnovers in regulation, gave the Cougars a chance to regain the lead. With five minutes left, Hallie Hinton scored to put North Harrison in front at 41-39.
Then, in overtime, North Harrison was a completely better version of its team — especially on defense. After scoring on the first possession, Hatton blocked a shot at the other end, her second of the night. The next time New Albany was on offense, Cali Nolot, who contributed 12 points, forced a turnover.
With its defense amplified, the team did what it knew best on offense, getting to the line. After the turnover, Stevi Burns got to the line and made both. From there, two more players were fouled, and with a combined three makes, the score was already 48-43, the most New Albany had been down since the beginning of the second quarter.
