The owner of the fast-deteriorating Pontiac Silverdome announced Tuesday a design contest for ideas on what to do with the once-domed stadium.
The juried competition is seeking entries from people around the world on possible ways to redevelop the 127-acre site — with or without the now-roofless and derelict Silverdome. The online submission deadline is April 12 and prizes of $3,000, $1,000 and $500 will be awarded. A spokeswoman for the owner said there is no commitment to use the winning entry for the property’s redevelopment.
The Silverdome has been in advancing disrepair since its inflatable canvas roof became damaged in a 2013 winter storm. Recent aerial photos from news station helicopters show the roof now completely gone and the stadium’s inside covered in snow.
Formerly home to the Detroit Lions, the Silverdome was bought in a 2009 auction by the Triple Investment Group for $583,000. The investment group is controlled by the family of Andreas Apostolopoulos, who also owns downtown Detroit’s Penobscot Building.
“We continue to remain steadfast in upholding the integrity of the property, and have been consulting with many organizations and businesses both nationally and within Oakland County for more than a year now regarding its current and future use,” Apostolopoulos said Tuesday in a statement.
Triple Investment Group held a clearance auction last spring of the Silverdome‘s remaining contents. The week-long event netted about $500,000 from a range of items including stadium seats, end-zone turf, scoreboards, TVs and old copper wiring, the Associated Press reported.
The Silverdome opened in 1975 and has been used only sporadically since 2002, when the Lions moved to Ford Field in downtown Detroit.
The contest’s website —1200featherstone.com — lists four judges, including two architecture professors at the University of Michigan.
