The New Paltz High School boys swimming and diving team succeeded at Saturday’s Section 9 championships at Valley Central High School in Montgomery.
New Paltz’s 200-yard medley relay team of Emile Kuyl, Brennan McEntee, Seamus Trzewik-Quinn and Liam O’Donnell placed first with a time of 1:38.52. That foursome qualified for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s championship meet, which will be held at Ithaca College, Feb. 27-28.
Kuyl qualified for states in the 50 freestyle in the preliminary round on Thursday with a time of 21.68. He swam a time of 21.90 in the same event in Saturday’s finals, winning the championships.
Additionally, he qualified for the 200 individual medley in the preliminaries with a time of 1:56.92 and the 100 breaststroke (58.31). Kuyl also qualified for the 100 freestyle (54.56) on Jan. 21 and the 100 butterfly (53.78) on Jan. 31.
The Huguenots’ team of Trzewik-Quinn, Kuyl, O’Donnell and Richard Berger qualified for states in the 200 freestyle relay, placing second with a time of 1:28.71 Saturday.
Trzewik-Quinn qualified for the state meet by finishing third in Saturday’s 100 backstroke with a time of 53.41. He also swam the 200 individual medley in a time of 1:59.71 to qualify in the preliminary round.
As a team, New Paltz finished fourth overall with 222 points. Marlboro placed 12th (78.5), while Poughkeepsie (45) was 13th. The overall champion was Newburgh Free Academy.
