Will Muschamp isn’t wasting any time getting his feet wet in his new role.

Just days after officially signing on to succeed Steve Spurrier at South Carolina, Muschamp spent Wednesday night having dinner with top quarterback recruit Brandon McIlwain. A four-star dual-threat quarterback at Council Rock North, Penn., McIlwain has been chased by Penn State and others since the departure of Spurrier. The recent Pennsylvania Gatorade Football Player of the Year winner is also a top MLB Draft prospect, so even signing with the Gamecocks won’t necessarily ensure he actually plays in Columbia in the future.

That uncertainty hasn’t kept away the South Carolina coaches. In fact, Muschamp clearly made it a priority to connect with McIlwain and assure him how important he is for the program’s future … all over a plate of chicken. Muschamp was joined by offensive coordinator Kurt Roper, and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson on Wednesday, meaning that the three most important coaches at South Carolina were all in McIlwain’s dining room and kitchen on Wednesday.

Will it do the trick and keep McIlwain in the fold? Who knows. At this point, whatever happens from here, no one can say that Muschamp didn’t pull out all the stops to get his man.
