Mike Thompson comes to Union City from a pretty successful stint as head coach in the state of Missouri.

The former Coach of the Year in the Show-Me State’s Class 2 brings about 18 years of coaching experience, as well as a high standard to the always-competitive Indians program.

Thompson led Lathrop High School to the Class 2 state quarterfinals in 2012 and has won various conference and district championships.

He moved to Indiana to be closer to his son, who will be a freshman at Notre Dame.

Among the tasks for Thompson are replacing starting quarterback Taylor Moore and the school’s all-time leading rusher in graduate Mason Wine.

Senior Jaydan Baker returns with two passing completions, 126 rushing yards and All-TEC honorable mention.

Junior Tyler Thornhill returns with a team-high 167 receiving yards.

Thornhill had 553 all-purpose yards, including 337 on kick-off returns.

Thornhill also had 72 total tackles and Baker had five quarterback sacks.

Thornhill and Baker each had an interception.

Thompson said Thornhill and senior Jordan Stuckey could also see time in the backfield and Bailey Hughes will be a wide receiver.

Union City had not named a starting quarterback at print time, but junior Aaron Foster and sophomores Trevor Thompson and Kyler Purdin are listed as quarterbacks on the roster.

Trevor Thompson was injured during last Friday’s scrimmage and is expected to get an MRI before Friday’s season opener.

James Boyd, Hunter Cline and Albert Vazquez are also seniors, while Gage Adkins, Hayden Downey, Isaac Jefferis, Zach Mahaffa and Lucas Suerdick are juniors.

The rest of the roster features freshmen and sophomores who try to replace the graduation of 14 seniors last year.

“We’re really young,” Thompson said. “We’re young and weve got a lot of kids who, everybody is trying to learn something new, we’ve got a long way to go. It’s kind of hard to tell what we’ll look like. We’re going to probably end up running the ball more than we throw it.”

Union City opens the season with a Tri-Eastern Conference road trip to Tri High Friday, before hosting Mississinawa Valley of Union City, Ohio in Week 2 and TEC foe Union County in Week 3.

The second non-conference game is Sept. 11 at Randolph County foe Monroe Central and the Indians meet Centerville at Ball State Day Sept. 19.

TEC and county foe Winchester visits Union City Sept. 25, the Indians host Lincoln Oct. 2 and Hagerstown Oct. 9 and conclude the regular season on the road Oct. 16 at reigning TEC champion Northestern.

Union City went 4-6 last year, including 3-4 in the TEC.

Thompson replaces Keith Maloy, A Union City graduate who led the Indians to a 35-38 mark over seven seasons.

“I’m learning,” Thompson said. “We did a little it this summer, … got to see several guys in the conference.

“… I think every community and every school has its own unique aspects to it, but it’s really not that different. I think its interesting you move two states away but theres so many similarities.”
