NJ high school track coach asks Gaslight Anthem lead singer to speak in class

You have to give him credit for trying. And hey, it might just work.

Andrew Cusick is an English teacher and track and field coach at Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, N.J. He recently asked some of his students who their “dream” guest lecturer would be for a creative writing class, and they came up with Brian Fallon, the lead singer of peak Jersey rock group Gaslight Anthem. So, Cusick just went and reached out to Fallon on Twitter to try and land him in his classroom.

Cusick isn’t just your garden variety English teacher, either. He holds an MFA in creative writing from New York City’s New School and studied creative writing, political science and philosophy at Bucknell. His short stories have been published in a number of prominent industry journals, including Glimmer Train. He became a track coach along the way, focusing on CBA’s throwers and jumpers in field events, as his Twitter handle is testament to.

So far, he hasn’t gotten an affirmative response from Fallon, though he and his class have launched a formal hashtag campaign to rectify that. If he does, something tells us that Cusick’s student athletes may want to sit in on one of his classes for a day.
