NJSIAA Football Roundup: Matawan wins OT thriller and more

Quarterback George Pearson found Isaiah Phillip for an 11 yard touchdown pass in the third overtime period, as No. 5 Matawan topped No. 4 Hopewell Valley 24-18 in an NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III quarterfinal game on Friday night.

After the touchdown from Phillip, Hopewell Valley was unable to answer with a score.

Matawan linebacker Devan Williams recorded the game-winning sack on fourth down for the Huskies.

Shawn Ramcheran had a 72 yard touchdown run in the first quarter for Matawan who will play at Rumson-FH in a Central Group III semifinal next Friday night.

In other NJSIAA games

Shore 36, Burlington 0: Doug Goldsmith set the tone early returning the opening kickoff 87 yards to give the top-seeded Blue Devils the lead in a Central Group I game.

Jack Britton added a 75 yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Goldsmith finished with three overall touchdown, including two TD runs.

Alex Johnson had a five yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Defensive end Eric Gram had a stand-out game according to Shore head coach Mark Costantino. Johnson also recovered a fumble on the defensive side of the ball for the Blue Devils.

Shore will host Florence next Friday in a Central Group I semifinal.

St. John Vianney 41, Donovan Catholic 0: Calvin Beaty recorded two rushing touchdowns and quarterback Anthony Brown added another rushing touchdown as the top-seeded Lancers defeated eighth-seeded Griffins in a Non-Public III quarterfinal game.

Brown also found Mike Stapert for a 60 yard touchdown pass.

The top-seeded Lancers will play the winner of Red Bank Catholic and Pope John.

Hammonton 30, Toms River South 7: Dashaun Alexander scored a touchdown but the eighth-seeded Indians fell to top-seeded Hammonton in a South Jersey Group IV quarterfinal game.
