Whether a team enters the postseason as the lowest seed in the district, or as the highest seed — like the 22-0 Pine Forest Eagles — no outcome is guaranteed.
And on Tuesday night, area girls basketball teams will put the regular season behind and begin the chase for one common goal — a district championship.
With Pine Forest and Catholic hosting their respective district tournaments, some teams will travel as far as Havana or Panama City.
Hosting the District 1-6A tournament for the first time since 2010, Pine Forest coach Chris Godwin knows each team (Pine Forest, Pensacola High, Pace, Milton, Escambia) will be hyped up for the tournament.
“We have gotta take every game seriously,” Godwin said. “Everything is on the table. (Rival teams) are coming in to win a district championship, just like we are.”
And though the Eagles earned the final win of Godwin’s first unbeaten regular season at Pine Forest last Thursday, they won’t have long to celebrate before Pine Forest’s District 1-6A semifinal game following a first-round bye.
“We just don’t talk about (the record) anymore,” the veteran coach said. “I gave the girls their props and told them what a good job they’ve done so far. Nobody can take that away, but you’ve got to finish the season. We’ve been in this situation before, you’ve just got to keep reminding the team.”
The Eagles will get the winner of Pace and Milton in the semifinal, and could face Washington, Escambia or Pensacola (first round bye) in the championship game.
The PHS Tigers offered Pine Forest its closest district battle of the regular season — a 59-53 battle at Pine Forest on Jan. 9.
And while the Eagles beat the Tigers by a bigger margin on Pensacola’s home court, Godwin admits that nothing tops being the host.
“It’s great playing at home,” said Godwin, referring to the District 1-6A tournament. “But, you do gotta ask for more help and volunteers. We treat it just like a regular game at our place, just we aren’t playing in every game. You just want to make sure everything is taken care of for the other teams games, too.”
District tournaments will conclude Saturday with respective championship games.
