SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Four-time defending Arizona Division I champion Tempe Corona del Sol (4-3) got down by 10 points in the opening quarter and never could overtake Washington state champion Garfield (Seattle) at the American Family Insurance Hoophall West event.
Garfield is ranked No. 12 in the Super 25.
Forward Alphonso Anderson and guard Jaylen Nowell each had 19 points to lead Garfield (5-0).
Junior guard Saben Lee led Corona del Sol with 26 points on 11 of 20 shooting. He also had six rebounds.
Garfield did a good job of face-guarding Alex Barcello, who was held to 14 points on 5 of 15 shooting after he scored 31 points Friday in a 10-point loss to Jersey City (N.J.) St. Anthony.
Corona del Sol committed 16 turnovers and made 7 of 20 3-pointers.
Corona del Sol closed to within 52-45 at the end of the third quarter on two 3-pointers by Dalen Dorsey. A 3 by Jeffrey McCain with 6:15 left cut Garfield’s lead to 56-49.
Garfield made 11 free throws in the final 2:42 to seal it.
“It was hard to come back on them,” Lee said. “You had to make the right reads and decisions. But it showed that our team has heart.”
