No. 16 Spartanburg ends losing streak to Byrnes

Spartanburg, S.C., overcame bad weather and a long winning streak by Byrnes for a 17-7 win Thursday.

On a rainy and muddy night in Duncan, S.C., the Vikings ended a 14-game losing streak to the Rebels. The game was moved up a day to avoid expected bad weather on Friday.

Spartanburg senior quarterback Austin Scott started the scoring with an 8-yard pass to Marcellus Wilson on the Vikings’ first drive, but that was all the high-scoring team could muster in the first half. Byrnes had its own touchdown, on a 1-yard run by quarterback Micah Young, to tie the game with 3:51to go in the first quarter.

Tavien Feaster’s 11-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter put the Vikings (6-0) up for good at 14-7.

Lawson hit a 27-yard field goal to push the lead to 17-7 with 5:36 to go in the third quarter following a botched fake punt by the Rebels (5-1).

Byrnes had a chance for a score following a 99-yard drive but after a catch, Chavis Dawkins fumbled at the goal line with 3:30 to go and Spartanburg recovered in the end zone.
