It’s a match worthy of a final.
Johnston and Ankeny Centennial will settle for it serving as the final match of the regular season.
The top two boys’ soccer teams in Class 3-A are scheduled to square off at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, putting pride and their perfect records on the line in Ankeny.
“I’ve been impressed the demeanor of the players in the build-up, because they’re approaching it like a job,” Johnston coach Heath Weeks said. “They’re getting ready to do their work.”
Top-ranked Johnston has been dominant in the CIML again, coming off a runner-up finish and allowing four goals in its matches.
No. 2 Centennial is unbeaten in the program’s second season.
“Both teams learned from it and it was probably good for both teams to build off of, but that was last year,” Centennial senior midfielder Garrett Culligan said last month of last year’s 4-3 Johnston win.
Only five undefeated teams remain across the state, including No. 5 Sioux City West (15-0) in 3-A.
“It’s going to be two teams that are pretty evenly matched,” Weeks said.
Johnston and Centennial will be in separate substate brackets when the 3-A postseason begins on Tuesday. Both teams have already received first round byes.
