Struggling to put away South Forsyth (Cumming, Ga.), No. 2 Colquitt County (Moultrie) turned to its defense Friday for a 49-31 AAAAAA quarterfinal victory.
The No. 2-ranked Packers, accustomed to dominating opponents this season, trailed 31-28 with just less than 12 minutes to go in the game. That’s when Quan Singletary picked off a pass by War Eagles quarterback Davis Shanley, setting up the Packers’ Ty Lee to score from the 8-yard line four plays later to give Colquitt a 35-31 lead with 8:32 to go.
On the next series for South Forsyth (11-2), the Packers tipped a punt so that it traveled only a yard. Lee ran 29 yards on the next play to put Colquitt (13-0) up 42-31.
Singletary, Jamarcus Walker and Akivie Bailey picked off Shanley three times in a row to close out the threat.
The Packers will play Mill Creek (Hoschton) next week in a AAAAAA semifinal.
Up until the late interceptions, Shanley had been a thorn in the Packers’ side. He connected with Jalen Camp for touchdown passes of 84 and 63 yards.
Lee had three touchdown runs and Kiel Pollard ran in a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass for Colquitt, which had two runs in the game of 21 unanswered points.
