No. 23 Manvel upset in season opener, 29-26

Missed opportunities.

When USA TODAY High School Sports Super 25 No. 23 Manvel looks back on its 29-26 opening week loss to Spring Westfield, it can contemplate a full buffet of mistakes and chances to take control that went by the wayside.

There was the 13-point lead in the third quarter … which all too quickly evaporated. There was Westfield’s fumble into the end zone for a touchdown in the closing minute when falling into the end zone would have sealed the win … or working more time would have also just about sealed the win.

And, while it was unlikely to make a difference, there was this bizarre play call on the final snap of the game. A bubble screen over a Hail Mary with no time left?

Regardless of the reasons, the bottom line is that Manvel is not long for the Super 25. The Mavericks were both outplayed and self-destructive against Westfield at home, sending Westfield and its fans into delirium about an unlikely season-opening victory, despite a Reggie Hemphill-Mapps touchdown that brought Manvel within three late.

For Westfield, quarterback Dillon Sterling-Cole, an Arizona State commit, scored on the ground and through the air in a solid start to his senior campaign.

If you were a Manvel fan, at least your favorite local NFL All-Pro defensive end made an appearance just for the heck of it.
