If traditional national power De La Salle eventually loses again, it sure looks like it won’t come before a potential State Bowl bid. The Spartans, currently the No. 6 team in the USA TODAY High School Sports Super 25, jumped out to a 42-0 lead in a North Coast Section semifinal before cruising to a 70-14 rout of Pittsburg.
Just how dominant was De La Salle’s victory? The Spartans led 56-7 at halftime and opened the second half with a running clock and a lineup comprised entirely of backups. Scarily, even that didn’t slow down the Spartans too much; they scored the first touchdown of the second half and continued to put distance between the two teams.
The victory was the 10th straight since a season-opening loss at Trinity of Euless, a Texas power that was recently upset in the UIL playoffs. Had the Spartans won that game, they almost surely would still be at the top of the national rankings, needing only to win out to claim another national title.
Instead, they’re now on the outside looking in, or perhaps rather pounding on the glass each week staking a powerful claim that if all five teams in front of them happen to fall, they are well deserving of a one-loss crown.
