PALM BAY — Bayside High stayed with Jensen Beach for a half, but turnovers and mistakes led to an easy 42-7 victory for the Falcons in a District 14, Class 6A opener.
Jensen Beach scored 13 points in the first two and a half minutes after a blocked punt and a fumble recovery. But Bayside would settle down and Patric McNally’s four-yard touchdown run cut the lead to 13-7.
The Bears would head to halftime feeling good about their chances. But a strong Jensen Beach running attack and some untimely turnovers led to 29 unanswered points and an easy district win for the Falcons.
“The biggest thing tonight was playing smart,” Bayside High football coach Mike Nahl said. “We had some non-smart football plays on a lot of levels tonight. A few silly things we are working on.”
The mistakes led to easy drives for Jensen Beach as they had scoring drives of eight and two yardes in the second half along with a safety after a punt return went bad and had Bayside start at the 1, but could not get out of the end zone.
“We are still in the process of learning,” Nahl said. “Another week where our defense played great in some bad situations. They played great with their backs against the wall at times.”
The Bears defense forced them to punt in three of the four drives in the first half and the Jensen Beach offensive touchdown was on a drive that started at the 2-yard line after a blocked punt.
“We have the capability of playing lights out defense, we have the capability of moving the ball on anybody. It is about finishing drives, completing defensive stands and not putting ourselves in bad situations.”
Bayside (0-3) will look to pick up that first win of the season Friday night when they travel to Satellite.
