NORFORK — The Norfork Lady Panthers had a large run in each quarter, including one throughout the third quarter as a whole, and stormed to a 73-31 victory over the Hillcrest Lady Screamin’ Eagles on homecoming night Friday in 1A-2 North Conference play at Bobby D. Hulse Gymnasium.

Norfork crafted a 20-2 run to open the game, used a 12-2 run in the second quarter, and outscored the Lady Eagles 18-6 in the third to invoke the running-clock mercy rule.

Sophomore Marleigh Dodson led the Lady Panthers with a game-high 18 points, scoring six of those in the third as the hosts turned a 40-18 halftime lead into a 58-24 cushion.

Norfork scored 15 more with a running clock in the fourth, with Summer Sisco tossing in five for the Lady Panthers.

Sophomore Ivy McGowan added 17 points for the Lady Panthers, who improve to 1-1 in league play. Rachel Durham paced Hillcrest with eight points, all coming in the first quarter.

Riley Scalf and McGowan each hit 3-pointers to begin the game, and after Hillcrest’s Shanna Hoggard scored her team’s first basket, Norfork poured in 14 straight for a 20-2 advantage.

Dodson and McGowan both hit 3-pointers, and Dodson scored seven total during the run as the Lady Panthers built the huge lead.

Durham went on a personal 8-0 run, though, and Norfork led just 22-10 at the end of one. Carly Otwell scored to bring Hillcrest within 10 to open the second, but Norfork responded with another huge run to go up by 20.

The last time Norfork’s senior boys took the court, they allowed 103 points in a nonconference loss Tuesday at Valley Springs. In a matchup of contrasting styles, the Panthers locked down Hillcrest defensively Friday and picked up their first league win of the year.

The defensive turnaround improved Norfork to 1-1 in the 1A-2 North and dropped the Eagles to 0-3.

Junior guard Travis Lewis scored all of Norfork’s field goals in the first quarter, and, save 1 of 2 free throws from Wyatt Chapman, all of the Panthers’ points in the opening stanza as the hosts built a 13-2 lead.

The Eagles received just two field goals — buckets by Dyllan Nunnally and Nick Allen — in the first half and trailed 32-5 at halftime as Norfork ended the half with layups by Lewis and Chapman and a 3-pointer by Grant Casey.

All of the Panthers’ scoring in the third period came from beyond the 3-point arc, but Norfork hit five of them — three by Lewis and two by Casey — to take a 47-11 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The clock ran continuously in the fourth, due to the mercy rule, and Norfork never let the lead slip below 31.

Lewis led all scorers with 26 points and Casey found double figures with 12 for Norfork.
