Hunterdon Central’s 30-27 victory over North Hunterdon in the state Group IV semifinal Sunday morning wasn’t as dominating as the Red Devils’ regular-season victory last month in Clinton. But that was of little solace to North Hunterdon.
No. 2 seed Hunterdon Central earned its first state final berth since 2010 against top-seeded Brick Memorial, pulling ahead for good on senior 160-pounder Joe Scerbo’s 12-0 major and extending it to 11-6 when sophomore Mike Iodice beat Mike Sicola 5-2 at 170. Senior 182-pounder Nick Suk gave the Red Devils a 14-6 lead with a 7-2 win and Nestor Crespo’s major made it 18-6. Sophomore Victor Lacombe made it 21-6 with a 3-2 win before sophomore 285-pounder Charlie Tordik beat Leo Aquino in a UTB.
Hunterdon Central, 1-11 in state finals, last won a state title in 1989.
