Marysville’s Dante Chrcek runs the ball during a football game Thursday, September 3, 2015 at Memorial Stadium in Port Huron.

With its old school feel and closeness of the fans, Memorial Stadium is one of the must-see fields in the area.

However, Marysville head coach Mark Caza likes taking his team to play Port Huron Northern for another reason.

“It’s just a five minute drive away,” Caza said with a laugh on Tuesday.

It makes sense for the two crosstown rivals to face each other annually, but this is only the second year in a row the Huskies and Vikings have rekindled their rivalry in awhile. The two teams played annually from 1982 to 2001 — and there was another 2006-07 series — but the rivalry vanished for quite some time.

Northern owns the series record with a 17-10 record, and the the 28th meeting between the two was postponed because of the weather. The game will pick up in the third quarter at 7 p.m. today. Marysville is leading 30-22 with 9:06 remaining in the third quarter.

Now that Northern is in the MAC Gold with Marysville and plenty of other nearby schools, the schedule is more personal to the area.

“They’re close, the kids know each other and it’s an easy rivalry,” said Todd Mahaffy, who’s watched his sons play Northern football for nine years.

“There’s a lot of people that do business in both towns.”

This game doesn’t just carry a sense of pride, but also a sense of urgency. Each team dropped its first game in Week 1, and this MAC Gold conference opener will decide which team starts the season at 0-2.

“This game is very important for both teams,” Mahaffy said. “Both lost their first game, so this will tell a lot for the rest of their season.”
