KUSA – Sometimes she doesn’t understand the attention.
“I’m not an all-star. I just play softball and I love playing,” Northglenn sophomore Jaide Bucher said.
She made her varsity softball team as a freshman.
She also happens to have been born without the lower portion of her right arm. Jaide was featured on 9NEWS in October 2014.
“After the whole 9NEWS story… Gatorade got in contact with me,” Bucher said. “They came out in June and they filmed one of my tournaments.”
Jaide starred in Gatorade’s Win from Within series that aired on ESPN and got to meet her idol, Jim Abbott, during filming. The former big league pitcher also played with only one hand and most famously threw a no-hitter in 1993.
“I almost started crying, big shock,” said Bucher.
“I’ve been blown away by meeting this great young softball player,” Abbott said. “Her story is phenomenal. but you talk about strength and confidence from within, she has so much that it’s like oozing out.”
The two chatted on the field, played catch and Abbott threw Jaide batting practice.
“Being able to sit down and have a conversation about our lives and comparing who we are and the sports we play it’s an amazing experience and I’m still in shock that it actually happened,” Bucher told 9NEWS.
“I remember being unsure of myself at that age and she doesn’t have a lick of that,” said Abbott. “She’s so ready to show the world what she can do.”
Jaide may not understand it, but this attention she’ll cherish forever.
