The Gulf Breeze and Catholic volleyball teams enter the week as two of the area’s unbeaten teams.

By Thursday, at least one of them is guaranteed a loss.

The Dolphins (6-0, 5-0 in 1-6A) and Crusaders (6-0, 3-0 in 1-4A) face off at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Catholic in a potential meeting of unbeaten teams (the Dolphins must first get the better of Pine Forest and the Crusaders have to survive McGill-Toolen, both on Tuesday).

Gulf Breeze could have the early edge as the Dolphins have yet to drop a single game in any of their six matches this season.

Undefeated Jay volleyball team rolls to 6-0 record

In North Santa Rosa County, the Jay Royals — the area’s third unbeaten volleyball team — have opened the season with a 6-0 win streak of their own.

“We’re getting better,” said Jay coach Scott Campbell following Thursday’s win against Northview. “It’s just one of those things.

“I’ve had all of ’em since the 7th grade. The core of ’em, they’ve been with me pretty much the whole time. When they were (playing as) 7th and 8th they went 16-4.”

The Royals put their streak on the line this week as they face their biggest tests of the regular season to-date: T.R. Miller at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Baker at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Washington swim team takes training outdoors

Sometimes you have to get away from the pool.

Prior to the the start of the regular season, the Washington High swim team escaped the confines of the Washington High Aquatic Center and headed for open water.

“We do one beach training a year, right before school starts,” said coach Megan Oberholtzer. “It’s tough and hardcore, but it’s fun and it gets them out of these four walls that they’re in so often.”

“We started doing that like five or six years ago.”

The training is a fun, offseason highlight for the team and includes workouts on the sand and in the water … albeit typically the Sound.

“We try and swim on the Gulf side, but sometimes it’s a little too rough,” said sophomore Coulson Barfield. “We normally go to the sound side and swim around the reef a few times, do some IMs, sprints across the reef … it’s fun.”

Aggies open district with win

In a three-team district where every win counts, the Tate High volleyball team got things off on the right foot with a win against Navarre last week in four games.

It is a marked turnaround from last season when the Aggies (now 6-2, 1-0 in 1-7A) started 3-6.

The team takes on its only other district opponent — Niceville — at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The Eagles are 2-2 entering the week with a game against Mosley on Tuesday.

Catholic’s Floyd is Athlete of the Week

After being groomed to fill the shoes of long-time setter Emily Emmons, Ellen Floyd appears to be doing just fine.

The Catholic High sophomore is the Pensacola News Journal Athlete of the Week this week after leaving her mark in a game against Mosley with one kill, 4 aces, 2 blocks, 16 digs and an astounding 41 assists.

Floyd and the rest of the Crusaders will have their work cut out for them this week if they want to hang onto their undefeated record with matches against McGill-Toolen and Gulf Breeze
