Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) lost for the first this season Saturday in a nationally televised game as part of the Penny Hardaway Hoopfest in Memphis. The final was 87-76 and Oak Hill trailed by as many as 20 in the second half.
Oak Hill had no such problems bouncing back Monday night with a 103-63 victory against visiting Word of God (Raleigh, N.C.). Word of God entered the game with an 18-1 record.
After taking a 21-16 lead after the first quarter, Oak Hill — now No. 6 in the Super 25 — outscored Word of God 82-47 the rest of the way, starting with a strong second quarter and never trailed.
Florida State signee Dwayne Bacon had 36 points and nine rebounds in the victory. Ohio State signee Daniel Giddens had 12 points and rebounds, Penn State commit Joe Hampton had 10 points and Phillips had nine points and 10 assists. Phillips, who committed to Missouri recently, took a hard fall at one point but was able to continue.
Oak Hill is heading to Springfield, Mo., for the Tournament of Champions. Oak Hill opens Thursday with Chino Hills (Calif.).
