Ohio State sophomore guard Kelsey Mitchell has been named to the Associated Press 2014-15 Preseason All-America Team.
Voted on from a national media panel, Mitchell’s selection is just the third time an Ohio State women’s basketball player has been named to the AP preseason team.
Mitchell, a 2014 Princeton High School graduate, joins Jessica Davenport who garnered the honor before the 2005-06 season and Jantel Lavender who earned the award prior to the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.
Mitchell, the AP Ohio Ms. Basketball winner and McDonald’s All-American her senior season with Princeton, was also named to five other preseason All-America teams in addition to being named the Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year.
Mitchell averaged 24.9 points last season which led the NCAA. She scored a total of 873 points, which was a Big Ten and Ohio State single-season record. She also made an NCAA single-season record 127 three-pointers last season.
The Buckeyes, who are ranked No. 6 in the preseason Associated Press poll and No. 10 in the USA Today/Coaches poll, tip off the season at 7 p.m., Friday at No. 2 South Carolina. The home opener is at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 16 against top-ranked UConn.
