OMRO – Talking with Omro quarterback Spencer Potratz after the Week 2 win over Winneconne, the senior shared his thoughts on the upcoming season.
Standing at 1-1, Potratz said this was the year his Foxes won a Flyway Conference Championship. There was no question about it in his tone — he pretty much guaranteed one. He also wanted to finally get over the hump in the playoffs, as Omro has never gotten past Level 2 before.
Fast forward to the end of November and as Potratz looks back, he can say he achieved all of those goals. The Foxes finished the season 11-2 — winning a Flyway title, their first since 2010 — and fell just one game short of state after falling to Lodi in the WIAA Division 4 Level 4 playoff game.
“We set goals in the beginning of the season, first off in Week 2 to win the China Bull game and then beat St. Mary’s Springs in the Flyway Championship,” Potratz said. “Then every week in the playoffs to keep getting wins.”
Potratz, a starter since his sophomore season, was a big reason why the Foxes made history this season. And for that same reason, that’s why Potratz was selected as the Oshkosh Northwestern Media Offensive Player of the Year.
The senior finished the season with 708 passing yards and nine touchdowns against only one interception, while rushing for 739 yards — which was second on the team — and added eight touchdowns.
“You can see him from sophomore to junior to season years just develop, not just physically but mentally and emotionally,” Omro football coach Dave Wellhoefer said. “He was the backbone of our team this year, especially our offense. He distributes the ball, gets it where it needs to be and had a great year throwing the football. He doesn’t have the 1,000-1,000 rushing and passing (yardage) like some quarterbacks do but we don’t have the yards that we have and the touchdowns that we have without him getting the ball distributed, getting the reads and things like that.
“I thought I had a pretty good season, obviously I think it could always be better,” Potratz added. “We were so close to our goal and we fell a bit short.”
Omro was shut out 23-0 in that loss to Lodi and that hurt, there’s no questioning that. But in the grand scheme of things, it was a historic season.
Potratz credited the team’s chemistry for their success this season.
“We were practicing all summer with each other, I felt confident and comfortable with everyone and we were just a close group of guys and I felt like it was the year something was going to happen,” Potratz said.
Looking back at his four years playing football, Potratz said beating Winneconne twice this season, along with winning a Flyway title — and of course making it past round two — was his favorite memories.
Potratz is still undecided on what he plans on doing next year, but said he’d still like to play football at the next level.
“I’m still undecided but I feel like I’m not done with football yet,” he said. “I think I might try to keep playing somewhere.”
Potratz was joined on the first-team with Oshkosh North’s Eliot Dittmer (running back) and Jacob Dedering (lineman), Omro’s Chris Hess (running back), Kenny Thums (lineman) and Coleon Hayes (lineman), Berlin’s Lucas Gravunder (wideout), Ryan Wenig (punter) Zach Wilson (lineman), Winneconne’s Andrew Grignon (lineman) and Ripon’s Luke Loewe (wideout).
