Balance is one benefit for this year’s Richmond girls golf team.

A strong combination of veterans and younger players is another.

The Red Devils add three talented freshmen with two experienced senior players, a mixture veteran coach Ron Murphy hopes pays dividends for a team with high aspirations.

“We’re going to be around 85, things like that. Just balanced,” Murphy said. “That’s good for a golf team.

“They’re not going to go high (with their scores).”

Also good is the return of Kayla Owens and Angela Roggero, Richmond’s senior standouts. Both were individual regional qualifiers two years ago as sophomores, and they led the entire Red Devil team back to that level last season.

Murphy told his seniors this was “their team.”

“I told them at practice, ‘You have to develop the freshmen. You have to work hard,'” Murphy said. “We’re going to be a good team.”

Joining Owens and Roggero are freshmen Karissa Owens, Jacey Cornett and Maggie Camp.

The Red Devils begin play Monday with the annual Richmond Invitational at Elks.

Their opening week doesn’t end there. The Red Devils will also play Tuesday at the Union County Invitational, Wednesday at Anderson for a dual match and then Saturday at New Castle for another invitational.

“We only have a couple of days of practice and then we get into it,” Murphy said. “They’ve played pretty well. I’m really excited.”

Richmond also has scheduled invitationals at Ben Davis (Aug. 15), Connersville (Aug. 22) and Shelbyville (Sept. 5).

The North Central Conference meet is Sept. 12.

“We’ll be competitive for the NCC and the sectional. We’re getting ready for that,” Murphy said.

New Castle’s Westwood Golf Club is also the site of this year’s regional, an event Murphy hopes the entire Richmond team sees once again later this fall.

Richmond was third at last year’s sectional to capture a regional spot. The Red Devils have 20 total sectional titles — tied with Marion for fifth most in the state —with the last coming in 2012.

“We have to chip and putt really well,” Murphy said. “That’s the key.”
