Grade: Senior
Height: 6-foot
Weight: 145 pounds

Athletic achievement: He raced to the Class 5A individual state championship this past season with a course-record time of 14:45, leading the Storm to the state title as a team. The state’s returning Gatorade Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year, Maton also broke the tape at the Oxford Classic, the George Fox Classic and the Intermountain Conference championships. He finished third at the Foot Locker West Regional championships in 15:36.4 and took 19th at the national Foot Locker Cross Country Championships.

Academic excellence: Maton has maintained a B average.

Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally on behalf of youth track clinics and an animal shelter.


“Matthew is a kid with high goals, looking even beyond his high school career, and I think the sky is the limit,” said Summit coach Carol McLatchie. “One of his big goals this year was to win state and break Galen Rupp’s record, and it was exciting to see him accomplish that.”

THE FUTURE: Maton has signed with Oregon.
