The No. 1 player in Utah has given a verbal commitment to Southern California.
Osa Masina, an outside linebacker, from Brighton in Salt Lake City, announced his decision during an assembly at his high school Friday.
Ranked as the No. 3 outside linebacker and No. 35 prospect overall by the 247Sports Composite, Masina was down to USC, UCLA and Arizona State.
Masina had 10 sacks and 97 tackles as a senior, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. He also ran for 596 yards with eight touchdowns on 94 carries.
Masina’s commitment is another indication that USC could be heading to a big National Signing Day. Craig Haubert, a national recruiting analyst for ESPN, had pointed in a recent interview to USC as one of the teams that could have a strong finish.
“They are sitting at No. 6 right now in our rankings,” he said. “Sometimes thing come together slower out west. The Trojans are in the mix for quite a few guys, like Iman Marshall, John Houston, Rasheem Green (from Serra), Osa Masina, the linebacker from Utah. There are still six or seven ESPN 300 guys that USC is very much in the race for and three or four where they are the team to beat. They are certainly somebody who could have a big day on signing day or the days leading up to it.”
