HINESBURG – Sadie Otley racked up 24 points, six steals and four assists and the Champlain Valley Union High School girls basketball team opened up its title defense with a 72-38 win over Burlington in the inaugural Kevin Riell Memorial Tournament on Thursday night.
Laurel Jaunich chipped in 11 points and three blocks for the three-time defending Division I champion Redhawks.
Norah Mitchell led Burlington with a dozen points.
CVU will play in the championship game of the tournament Saturday against the winner of today’s Burr and Burton-Mount Abraham game.
•Essex 57, St. Johnsbury 55: Essex used a 13-point effort from freshman Riley Smith to edge visiting St. Johnsbury in high school boys basketball on Thursday night.
Eli DiGrande led all scorers with 19 points for the Hornets (1-0) and Smith hit a key shot in the fourth quarter to hold off the Hilltoppers.
Antonio Carlisle had 16 points to lead the way for St. Johnsbury (0-1).
•Rutland 89, BFA-St. Albans 59: Nathaniel Kingsley posted 21 points and Rutland used a 29-8 second-quarter edge to defeat BFA-St. Albans in the Kevin Riell Memorial Tournament hosted by Champlain Valley.
Kyle Cassarino added 18 points and Braden Arnold chipped in 10 for the Raiders (1-0), who will play in Saturday’s championship round against the winner of today’s CVU-Burr and Burton game.
Jens Ulrich-Verderber pumped in 29 points for BFA.
•BFA-Fairfax 83, Richford 39: Paced by Evan McGregor’s 15 points, four players reached double figures in BFA-Fairfax’s home win over Richford.
Evan Michaud scored 14 points and tallied eight rebounds off the bench, Binny Singh added 12 points and Evan McNall put in 11 points for the Bullets, who led 38-13 at the break.
Devon Coons led Richford with 15 points. Kyle Doan had nine.
•Lamoille 57, Milton 54: Aidan Tilton helped Lamoille score a win on the road against Milton to open the season.
Tilton knocked in 20 of the Lancers’ points to open the season at 1-0.
Eric Menard had 15 points and Joe Beaupre tallied 11 points for the Yellowjackets (0-1).
•Danville 79, Stowe 33: Coleton Loura-Bumps had 11 points and 10 rebounds to tally a double-double in Danville’s win over visiting Stowe.
Riley Fenoff had a game-high 28 points for the Indians (1-0) and Andrew Smith added 11 points. Travis Grosse chipped in with nine assists and Ben Overby grabbed nine rebounds.
Rylee Laramee had 17 points for the Raiders (0-1) and Nathan Davidson added 12.
•U-32 60, Hartford 49: U-32 used an 8-2 run at the end of the second quarter to pull away from visiting Hartford to capture the win.
Kyle Booth led the Raiders (1-0) with 14 points and Jackson McCoy chipped in with 12 points.
Gavin Farnsworth netted 14 points for the Hurricanes (0-1).
•Hazen 66, Thetford 19: Denis LeCours recorded 21 points and outscored visiting Thetford in a win for Hazen.
Dan Kish added 10 points for the Wildcats, who move to 1-0.
Dylan Thorburn had seven points to pace Thetford (0-1).
•Craftsbury 51, Northfield 27: Austin Masi’s stat line — 27 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals — paced Craftsbury in a win over Northfield.
Isaac Spaulding added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Chargers (1-0).
Alec Steward led the Marauders (0-1) with 10 points.
•Middlebury 95, Johnson State 48: Matt St. Amour scored 19 points and Eric McCord came off the bench to tally 10 points and five rebounds as Middlebury won at Johnson.
The Panthers (3-4) held a 45-21 halftime lead and then put up 50 second-half points.
