The Lions have become very accustomed to overtime games this year. The first, in a home opening loss against Gonzaga Prep. The second, a loss against an inspired Yelm team. The most recent, Friday night’s homecoming/senior night win against the Olympia Bears.
In their second overtime game in a row, the underdog Lions fought until the very end, rallying in the fourth quarter to later win on a 34 yard, Bryce Bendixen field goal. Players stormed the field in celebration and in realization that they had clinched a playoff spot and a chance to play for the league title at Gig Harbor this Friday.
The defense really stepped up in the 16-13 win, including an interception by Ahmad Lewis in the end zone with a minute left. The Lions also forced a fumble on the one yard line in overtime that gave the Lions the chance to win the game with a field goal.
The Lions will heavily rely on their secondary next week as they face a high-powered Gig Harbor offense led by senior quarterback, Davis Alexander.
Senior captain and linebacker, Erik Glueck, commented on this week’s opportunity, “Friday’s game against Gig Harbor is huge, but it isn’t any bigger than any other game. Every single week, that game is the biggest game of our lives, so this game is just like any other week. The only difference in this game is that there is a league title at stake. This is extremely exciting because it adds some extra pizzazz to our last league game. Gig Harbor has a good offense but we also have a very good defense, so it is going to be a battle between a couple of good teams. We are solid on the run and will have to stop the pass game. Our hard work during the week will pay off in the end. Go Lions.”
It should be yet another exciting game for the Lions as they attempt to take back the league title from their crosstown (and bridge) rival.
