Hopper Environmental Services stranded nine baserunners over the first five innings, falling 8-4 to Paragould’s Glen Sain Ford — which smacked 13 hits — in Zone 2 Junior American Legion Baseball action Monday night at Cooper Park.
The second game of the conference doubleheader was rained out and is not expected to be rescheduled. The Exterminators (12-6, 7-6) open play in the Zone 2 Junior Tournament on Thursday at Blytheville against an opponent yet to be determined.
The teams combined for 23 hits in the zone finale, but Glen Sain Ford was able to drive more home early.
Paragould’s Tyler Harvey and Preston Hart each singled, and both scored on a base hit by Chase Hutson for the early lead. Peyton Hart singled and scored on a hit by Tanner Harvey to push the Paragould lead to 3-0 in the second.
Weston Shelton singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Peyton Hart to make it 4-0 in the top of the third.
Tyler Harvey went 4 for 4 at the plate, while Tanner Harvey, Preston Hart, Hutson and Shelton all went 2 for 4 for Paragould.
Mountain Home had six batters reach base in the third, but could produce only one run. Jon Adams led off the inning with an infield hit, and Jon Martin reached on a fielder’s choice that did not record an out.
Mason Kinder singled to left field to load the bases with no outs, and Brady Smith followed with a base hit to bring home the only run of the frame for the Exterminators. Back-to-back fielder’s choices that retired the lead runner at the plate, followed by a pop-out, however, got Paragould out of the inning without further damage.
Paragould got that run back in the fourth when Lathan Brooks reached on an error and later scored on a single by Tyler Harvey to make it 5-1.
Hopper finally put together a big inning, climbing within one with three runs in the fifth. Smith doubled, Luke Helm singled and Luke Kruse doubled home Smith with a double to center field. Helm’s courtesy runner — Kyle Rose — scored on a groundout by Peyton Kendrick, and Kruse came home when Brock Vigna reached on an error, making it 5-4.
After back-to-back strikeouts to begin the sixth inning, Paragould put together four straight hits to plate three runs and distance itself from the hosts.
Tanner and Tyler Harvey each singled, and after Kinder was replaced by Joseph Langston on the mound for Hopper, Hart brought home both with a base hit. Hart later scored on a single to right field by Hutson, stretching the lead to 8-4.
Caiden McFadden scattered 10 hits but picked up the victory for Glen Sain Ford, striking out four and allowing just two earned runs over a complete-game effort.
Smith and Kruse each went 2 for 4 with an RBI, and Kinder also was 2 for 4 to lead Hopper’s 10-hit attack.
Kinder took the loss, allowing 11 hits and seven runs — five earned. The left-hander struck out four and did not walk a batter. Langston allowed two hits and one run over 11/3 innings of relief.
