An entire day of quality basketball action gets underway Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. in the 2015 Paul Milllsap Classic in the Bossier Parish Community College gym.
The only girls’ matchup of the prestigious event will feature two-time defending LHSAA Class 2A state champion North Caddo against perennial state playoff participant Fairview, which advanced to the Class B semifinals last season. The Lady Rebels, who have already defeated 5A powerhouse West Monroe this year, feature UL Lafayette-signee Jasmine Thomas, along with potential D-I players Sumer Williams and Keyarrea Easter.
A seven-game slate of boys’ contests will tip at noon with Fairview and Grambling getting after each other. Local teams in the event include Fair Park, Huntington, Captain Shreve, Bossier, Byrd and North Caddo. Visiting teams are Atlanta, Anacoco, Leesville, Simsboro, St. Thomas More and Ouachita.
“The best matchup of the day might be Class C runner-up Atlanta against the Class B state champ Anacoco (1:30 p.m.),” said event organizer Mike Theus.
Atlanta boasts one of the state’s top juniors in Lashard Powell, while Anacoco counters with 2015 Class B MVP Will Reese, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard. The final contest of the day, Byrd versus North Caddo, will showcase arguably the top recruit in the state in the Rebels’ Robert Williams, a Texas A&M signee.
“We wanted to give some of our local teams a chance to play some strong teams they won’t see during the regular season,” Theus said. “It should be a good day of basketball.”
The one-day event is a fundraiser for Louisiana Select Team Millsap, Theus’ AAU club that travels the country playing in prestigious tournaments. Millsap, who played for Theus before starring at Louisiana Tech, then moving on to the NBA, is the sole sponsor of the AAU team.
“He sends me a check every year with no strings attached,” Theus said.
After each game, an MVP will be selected, according to Theus, who said all of the visiting teams were excited about participating.
“We’ve already had three teams wanting to be in it next year,” he said. “Last year’s event was great at LSUS and we’re expecting a similar atmosphere this year.”
