Pawling High School’s Chris Santana, a 145-pound wrestler, captured a Section 1 Division 2 championship meet Saturday at Westlake High School in Thornwood.
The win marked Santana’s first section championship and his 113th career win. Last season, Santana was a runner-up.
“He worked very hard in the offseason,” Pawling coach Joe Amuso Jr. said. “He was determined not to let another one slip through his fingers. It was a really good day.”
Santana won a 7-3 decision in the finals over Lou Quintanilla of Pleasantville; he had beaten Edgemont’s Max Worobow in the semifinal round.
“He had a smile across his face when he won,” Amuso said. “His family was there and it was a nice, touching moment to see them hug. They’re very supportive, he always has his family backing him.”
Amuso also said he was happy to see Santana win a sectional championship in his senior year.
“He led by example on the mat, showed the team how to work hard in practice,” Amuso said. “He capped it off with a section title.”
Pawling received top-6 finishes in Matt Kuhlmann (third, 152), Noah Fleischman (sixth, 113), Connor Foy (fifth, 126), Reece Bijou (sixth, 182) and Rob Drake (third, 195).
Ken Rogan (145) of Our Lady of Lourdes placed fifth. Teammate Lucca Ardovini-Brooker (152) placed sixth.
Pawling placed sixth in the overall team standings with 118.5 points. Lourdes was 13th with 33 points.
