Like many star players, Peekskill’s Lanay Rodney normally does not stay on the floor when her team already has a comfortable result secured late.
But during her team’s 70-43 win over visiting Haldane on Saturday, Rodney was closing in on 1,000 career points, and had a chance to reach it with her mother watching in the stands.
She reached the milestone just in the nick of time. With under a minute left, the junior forward managed to steal the ball and got a breakaway lay-up on her final field goal of the game to reach 1,000 points. The basket also gave her a game-high 32 points.
“I’ve never coached anyone with so much talent,” Peekskill coach Steven Loscher, who previously coached at Purchase, said. “It was moment I know she won’t forget.”
