St. Xavier 2017 quarterback Sean Clifford verbally committed to Penn State late this morning, according to St. X football coach Steve Specht.
Clifford is the area’s first college football verbal commitment in the 2017 class.
Clifford, who is 6 feet 4 and 205 pounds, also had offers that included UC, West Virginia, Boston College, Missouri, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Akron and Toledo. Rivals.com said Northwestern and Kentucky also offered.
He threw for 832 yards and nine touchdowns last season for the Bombers (10-3). He rushed for 314 yards and two touchdowns.
Mark Porter, director of ScoutingOhio.com, says Clifford’s very good football IQ gives him the early lead for top quarterback in Ohio in 2017.
“Clifford has a very smooth delivery and release that leads to his great accuracy and velocity,” ScoutingOhio.com director Mark Porter told Cincinnati.com. “(He) has very good athletic ability and will beat defenders with his feet when given the chance. Strong base and footwork in the pocket when passing.””
St. X opens the season Aug. 28 against Covington Catholic (5:30 p.m. kickoff) at Nippert Stadium in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown.
