One of Mississippi’s own will compete for a gold medal in the USA National Championship 3×3 tournament from May 1-3.
Kennedy Gavin, a Dandy Dozen forward from Petal, will play in the event with her AAU team, the AL Southern Starz. The sophomore’s 3×3 team consists of Notre Dame commit Erin Boley, Alabama signee Shaqueria Wade and 2016 wing Nia Hollie. The group won the qualifying tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C. to earn a berth to the championship round in Colorado Springs.
The rules of the 3×3 game are governed by FIBA, with each game in the tournament featuring a 12-second shot clock. With its rising popularity internationally, the 3×3 game will be introduced as an event in the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
If Gavin’s team wins the national championship, it will represent the USA in the world championships in Drebrecen, Hungary later this summer.
Gavin averaged 16.1 points and 10.3 rebounds for Petal this season. The Panthers finished with a second round loss in the playoffs and with a 19-13 record.
