PHENOMenology: As a bona fide freshman, Damon Harge's influence grows

By

As the growing awareness and popularity of the Newman siblings proves, you don’t have to be a ninth grader to play varsity high school basketball in the state of Florida. You do have to be good enough to hold your own, which is what young Damon Harge Jr. proved as an eighth grader during the 2013-14 season.

Now that he’s a bona fide freshman, Harge isn’t slowing down. The Orlando Christian Prep point guard has excelled in his sophomore season, using his slightly increased size — Harge is now 5-foot-8, 145 pounds — and his deft quickness to elude defenders at every turn.

Harge’s most recent mixtape, which dropped on Tuesday, shows that he’s still most comfortable cutting to the hoop and absolutely skinning his defender en route to the rim, but it also showcases a renewed level of ease with Harge’s jumper, particularly the step-back-and-pop threes that could be a huge addition at the next level.

Orlando Christian Prep has started the season 14-8, though the Warriors are still in need of a real signature win. They could get that Thursday, when they travel to Super 25 top-5 squad Montverde Academy. Even if the win doesn’t come, such a matchup will surely be worth tuning in to just to get a glimpse of Harge and Montverde superstar Ben Simmons trading possessions.
