We’re about one week into the 2015-16 Bayside Conference boys basketball season. Some teams have stumbled out of the gate early, while some have exceeded preseason expectations.
Here are the best teams, according to me, as of Dec. 9:
Pocomoke (2-0; 1-0)
The Warriors have steamrolled their first two opponents of the season, outscoring North Caroline and Mardela by a combined score of 176-62. Derrick Fooks’ side has their first test on Thursday as they travel to Wi-Hi’s Waller Dome.
Stephen Decatur (2-0; 1-0)
No Torrey Brittingham? No Tyree Henry? No problem. In their absence, the Seahawks have stepped up big with wins over Arcadia and Wi-Hi. Junior forward Keve Aluma, the Voyles brothers and more make this Decatur team very scary.
Parkside (2-0; 1-0)
Some thought Parkside couldn’t possibly be as good as they were last season, but Gary Briddell, Xavier Waters and the rest of the Rams are disproving that assumption. Coached by Dave Byer, the Rams are disciplined, fast and share the ball. They have started the season with two impressive road wins against Kent Island and Washington.
Queen Anne’s (2-0; 1-0)
The Lions have been the best team in the North Bayside so far. Cassius Warren, Mikey Monroe and Juwan Moore put a hurting on Mardela on Saturday and topped pre-season favorite Kent County on Tuesday.
Wicomico (1-1; 0-1)
Butch Waller’s Indians are .500 after two road games to start the season. It’s been a mixed bag for the Indians so far with a good showing against Kent County and a game against Decatur where they struggled. They’ll unveil a new scoreboard on Thursday, Dec. 10 when the Pocomoke Warriors come to town.
