Tim Ottmann has been given the 2015 State Award of Merit
KUSA – Every year the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) hands out an award to an athletic director who shows dedication and merit to high school and middle school athletics. This year the NIAAA presented Ponderosa’s Athletic Director, Tim Ottmann, with the 2015 State Award of Merit. It was given to Ottmann during the Colorado Athletic Directors Association (CADA) state conference at the Beaver Run Resort in Breckenridge, CO on April 27th.
Tim told 9News that this award means a lot to him. “I’m truly honored, and hope that I can serve as a positive example of the impact AD’s can make on coaching and the culture and climate of their school,” Ottmann said.
Ottmann has been Ponderosa’s Athletic Director since 1994 and the Mustangs have experienced a lot of success under his leadership. The high school has 25 state championships and 50 league championships with Ottmann at the helm. He says that being loyal to one school is what’s important.
“I don’t believe in hopping from school to school. Our youngest son Jake wrestled for me, and graduated in 2008. My wife, Angela, has been the Poms Coach for 20 years, and we have a daughter that is trying out for her poms team this week! We bleed Cardinal and Gold,” explained Ottmann.
Ottmann says one experience really stands out in his 20-plus years at Ponderosa High School.
“My best memory is coaching Jake [my son] in the 5A State Wrestling Finals in 2008. It was the last match I ever coached, and he lost, but I’ll never forget the experience and the way he handled it – an unbelievable act of class,” Ottmann said. “He led the team as we accepted the trophy and celebrated our 8th straight 5A State Championship. Amazing.”
