The longtime girls basketball coach at Mark Keppel High School in Alhambra, Calif. resigned suddenly when it was announced that he was under investigation for allegedly conducting an inappropriate relationship with a female student at the school.
As reported by the Pasadena Star-News, Joe Kikuchi cited personal health reasons as the motivation for his sudden resignation from teaching and coaching duties at Keppel on Tuesday, though an investigation into his alleged relationship was confirmed hours later. The Alhambra Police Department was notified about the investigation by the Keppel school resource officer.
The investigation into Kikuchi was part of three major moves announced on Wednesday, with the Alhambra Unified School District also placing both the school’s principal and assistant principal on leave. It was not immediately apparent whether those moves were connected to the investigation of Kikuchi or made independent of it.
Kikuchi leaves behind a successful legacy at Keppel, where he had a 79-18 career record and three league titles in his three seasons at the helm. The program finished one game short of the school’s first state title in the 2014-15 season, and was expected to contend for another league and state crown in 2015-16.
