Haywood County Post 47 baseball players have been swinging two things well lately – bats and brooms.

Mason Fox’s two-run single, followed by an RBI from Bryce Burgess broke a 6-6 tie in the 10th inning Thursday in Newton.

Haywood County went on to beat Hickory, 9-6, for its second consecutive best-of-five series playoff sweep.

Fox, a Pisgah graduate who has signed with Gardner-Webb, also hit a solo home run in the eighth inning. Florida State recruit Cal Raleigh went deep twice, depositing a couple homers over the scoreboard in right field at the Legion Fairgrounds.

Haywood County (23-5) has now won eight straight games and will continue its best-ever season in the Area IV championship series against Caldwell County (27-7). The format and dates for the series will be determined Friday.

The Area IV series is merely for bragging rights and seeding – Haywood County and Caldwell County have both qualified for the American Legion state tournament which is July 24-28 in Salisbury.
