Anna Haugen scored 16 and Ashley Ziolkowski pitched in 13 as the Impalas earned the 50-39 win over Sand Creek, last year’s Class 4A runner up.
The Impalas (1-0) are at Northglenn on Monday.
Senior Liah Davis scored 17 for Sand Creek.
THUNDERRIDGE 69, FOSSIL RIDGE 42 — Freshman Ashley Steffeck led the SaberCats with 14 points, and senior sister Sami Steffeck added 11, but it wasn’t enough for the SaberCats to pull off the upset over the defending Class 5A state champions.
Fossil Ridge (1-1) was outscored 23-3 in a disastrous second quarter.
ThunderRidge forward Jaz’myne Snipes led all scorers with 22 points.
The SaberCats continue play in the ThunderRidge Tournament on Saturday against Holy Family.
FORT COLLINS 56, GATEWAY 53 — Sophomore Grace Sluss scored 22 points and classmate Delsie Johnson added 10 as the young Lambkins opened the season with the win, handing Gateways its second loss.
LIBERTY COMMON 49, UNIVERSITY 24 — Halley Miklos had a big double-double, scoring 26 points and pulling down 13 rebounds for the Eagles, who improve to 2-0.
Chloe Kohl added 13 points for Liberty Common, which plays Briggsdale.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN 63, SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO 31 — Gabby McDonald had 14 and Holly Mackie had 12 as the Lobos rolled in the first game of their tournament in San Francisco.
RESURRECTION CHRISTIAN 87, CLASSICAL ACADEMY 64 — Tanner Ervin poured in 25 points, Luke Fick had 24 and Michael Stevenson had 19 as the Cougars rolled in the first game of a tournament in Pueblo.
FOSSIL RIDGE 179, LEGACY 133 — Bailey Kovac won the 200 free (2:02.51), Savannah French won the 100 fly (1:00.97), Phoebe Huey won the 100 free (57.87), Colleen Gillilan won the 500 free (5:20.73) and 100 backstroke (1:00.31) and Bayley Stewart won the 100 breaststroke (1:14.78). Fossil Ridge also won all three relays.
Rocky Mountain 37, Lakewood 23 — At 132 pounds Rocky Mountain’s Jason DeHerrera won a 10-5 decision over Rylan Morgan. Gunnar Anderson won by pin at 138. At 152, Josh Betts won by pin. Matt Maguire won a major decision at 160, Jake Hansen won a pin at 170. Quin McElvenny won a decision at 195 and Miyah Woolven won a decision at 220.
