MURFREESBORO – Oakland High won the Chattanooga Optimist Southeastern Track and Field Invitational on Friday at Walker Valley High with 124 points.
Oakland won five events, including three relays.
Chris Stokes won the 200-meter dash in 22.83 seconds. Teammate Eli Leskinen won the 3,200 in 9:45.08, more than 16 seconds faster than teammate Daniel Smith, who was second.
The Patriots 4×100-meter relay team of Tyler Black, Josh Cunningham, George Gbesee and Stokes won in 43.98. The 4x400m relay team of Jordan Hill, Jacob MaGuffee, Dustin Merritt and Nathan Mack won in 3:30.10. And the 4x800m relay team of Smith, MaGuffee, Jordan Hill and Nathan Mack won in 8:25.77, which edged second-place Baylor by more than 17 seconds.
Mack was also second in the 800m (1:59.16), Dexter Hurd was second in the discus (127-feet-2), Kyle Oliver was third in the discus (126-5), Gbesee was second in the triple jump (41-11 1/2).
Bennett signs for football: Two-sport athlete Kyle Bennett signed with Maryville College on Friday to play football.
Bennett, who is also a standout soccer player, was named the District 7-AAA Specialty MVP after hitting 5 of 6 field goals and 41 of 48 point-after touchdowns in 2014. Six of his seven missed extra points were blocked.
“I never thought it would come,” Bennett said. “I only played football for two years. Coach (Ron) Aydelott and (assistant) coach (Will) Kriesky helped me out tremendously.
“I love soccer, but I love football as well.”
Bennett was named the District 7-AAA Defensive MVP in 2014 for soccer. He was considering attending either East Tennessee State or Georgia State to play soccer.
Maryville, Tennesse-Martin and Austin Peay had all shown interest in Bennett for football.
“You look at programs and you say Austin Peay and UT Martin is Division I, but I just felt comfortable at Maryville College and thought that was a good place for me.”
Glover signs: Smyrna center Chavel Glover signed with Riverland Community College in Minnesota to play basketball. Glover, a 6-foot-4 post player, averaged 9.0 points and 6.8 rebounds during the regular season for the Bulldogs.
Stokes commits: Stokes, a two-sport athlete at Oakland, committed to Memphis for track and field. He also played football and is a standout sprinter for the Patriots, where finished sixth in the 100-meter dash at the state meet in 2014.
