JACKSON – On opening night of the 2015-16 girls’ basketball season, Battle Creek Central lost in a close game to Jackson High, 40-34.
Leading the Bearcats was Jamesha Smith with 15 points, 13 rebounds, and seven blocks.
Also contributing to the Bearcats’ effort was Tamera Gills with eight points and five boards and Kamara Jones with four points, five assists, and four steals.
Battle Creek Central will host Lakeview this Friday night.

COLDWATER 64, (at) QUINCY 24: The Cardinals (1-0) won their season opener over the Orioles, led by Malorie Rzepka with 17 points, Kendall Galloway with 14 points, and Jamie Wellet and Tyler Schied with six points apiece. In the loss for the Orioles (0-1), Katie Spalding led the way with 11 points, eight rebounds, and five steals, while Claire Supianoski grabbed five rebounds, and Zoe Aseltine added four points and three steals.
(At) COLON 37, UNION CITY 34: In the season opener that went down to the wire, the Magi were led by Anessa Broker with 13 points, while Keagan Bower scored nine points, recorded three steals, and was also the team’s leading rebounder with 12. Also contributing for Colon (1-0) was Gretta Minor with six points, seven steals, and three rebounds, Meagon Persing with six points, Kali Tyler with 10 boards and two points, and Morgan Czjkowski with four rebounds. In the loss for Union City, Rachel Wing led all-scorers with 20 points, while Emma Hoppe and Haley Harty each scored six. Wing also led the Chargers on the glass with 10 rebounds, with Harty and Kiley Spenelli each grabbing eight boards.
(At) BELLEVUE 61, CALHOUN CHRISTIAN 18: The Broncos kicked off the 2015-16 campaign with a victory, led by Bailey Whitcomb with 19 points, seven boards, three steals, and two assists. Casie Shannon added 14 points and seven rebounds, and Gabby Costello recorded 11 points, four assists, three steals, and two blocks for the Broncos. For the Cougars, Abby Parks had 12 points and eight rebounds.
