PERRY — The Class B honorable mention Marshall volleyball team captured a title at the Perry Invitational on Saturday, defeating Hanover Horton in a three-set final, 21-25, 25-23, 15-2.
The Redhawks advanced with wins over Fowler (25-8, 25-8), Portland St. Patrik (25-9, 25-11), Pickney (25-20, 26-24) and Waverly (25-8, 25-19).
“We really played well today,” said Marshall coach Bre Johnson. “It is so much fun to watch my team incorporate our practice plan into a game situation… Audrey Myers served nine straight points in Game 3 to seal the deal and win 15-2. We played with a lot of energy and enthusiasm and we finally finished.”
Chloe Webber led the Redhawks with 27 kills and 13 blocks; Kaylie Bates had 85 assists; Mackenzie Benham had 26 digs and Myers had 10 aces.
THORNAPPLE-KELLOGG INVITE: Class C top-ranked Bronson finished runner-up in the round-robin tournament, losing to Northview (28-30, 16-25) with wins over host Thornapple-Kellogg (25-13, 25-10), Northpointe Christian (25-22, 25-17), Holland (25-8, 25-16) and Kenowa Hills (25-16, 25-17). The Vikings (43-9-2) were led by Jill Pyles with 18 kills, 24 aces and 26 digs; Alexa Ratkowski had 21 kills, 57 assists and 19 digs; Allison Sikorski had 20 kills and 26 digs; Kiera Lasky had 63 digs; and Kirin Cekander had 22 kills and 36 digs.
JONESVILLE ‘Dig Pink’ TOURNEY: Union City fell to North Adams in bracket play (13-25, 11-25) after going 1-0-2 in pool play with a win over Camden-Frontier (25-24, 25-21) and splits with Portland (25-24, 21-25) and North Adams (25-21, 17-25). The Chargers (13-15-7) were led by Haley McIntosh with 19 kills and 11 digs; Haley Harty had 11 kills, 11 digs and nine aces; Rachel Wing had 10 kills, seven digs, six aces and four blocks; and Brenna Johnson had 10 digs.
Girls’ cross country
STURGIS KIWANIS INVITE: Harper Creek finished runner-up with a team score of 62, while Pennfield was sixth with a 132.
The Beavers’ top finishers were Danielle Stewart (eighth, 20:32.75), Hannah Berning (10th, 20:50.26), Allegra Baird (13th, 21:03.29), Emma Berning (14th, 21:03.71) and Julianna Adams (20th, 21:35.97).
Pennfield was paced by Mallorie Haaksma (fourth, 19:53.66), Savanna Gregory (30th, 23:28.65), Torey Fischer (32nd, 23:38.67), Shaylee Smith (34th, 23:59.56) and Ashley Morales (36th, 24:20.43).
Quincy won the small-school race with a team score of 15. The Orioles were led by Gabby Porter (second, 20:44.88), Meri Michael (third, 21:54.36), Madde Horn (fifth, 22:33.40), Nikole Loomis (sixth, 22:38.59) and Nicole Jodway (ninth, 24:26.17).
Bronson did not post a team score, but was led by Meghan Vaughn (10th, 24:59.42), Briana Uristegui (11th, 25:04.66) and Adriana Sanchez (16th, 26:13.99).
Boys’ cross country
STURGIS KIWANIS INVITE: Coldwater finished runner-up in the eight-team invitational with a score of 61. Harper Creek was fifth with a 109 and Pennfield was sixth with a 155.
Coldwater was paced by Shuaib Aljabaly (third, 16:16.53), Ben Fagen (eighth, 16:38.40), Josh Evers (12th, 16:58.23) and Matt Sowles (14th, 17:16.69).
Harper Creek’s top runners were Benji Isaacson (17th, 17:34.99), Tommy Shaw (18th, 17:38.08), Devon Funk (21st, 17:48.74), Drew VanWagner (25th, 17:59.97) and Drew Haller (28th, 18:11.36).
Pennfield was led by Nick Simonds (20th, 17:44.82), Kyle Tharp (27th, 18:09.36), Jean-Luc Lachance (33rd, 18:31.18), Nolan Bornamann (35th, 18:46.44) and Keagan Burns (40th, 19:03.92).
Bronson won the small-school race with a team score of 33, while Quincy was fourth with 67.
Leading Bronson were Colin Ransbottom (fourth, 17:53.35), Marcus Broom (fifth, 18:07.86), Hunter Trine (seventh, 18:27.09), Luis DePaz (10th, 18:56.71) and Isaac Robertson (12th, 19:04.68).
Quincy was paced by Nathan Nohr (third, 17:36.96), Brandon Gary (sixth, 18:16.98), Joshua Pepper (19th, 19:40.99), Bryce Bassage (21st, 19:50.21) and Brock Martin (24th, 20:07.13).
