
Kiara Lester, Deptford track
As part of our look at South Jersey girls’ track, sports writer Kevin Callahan will spend five minutes each week asking athletes similar questions.
KC: Although just a junior, what colleges are you looking at now?
KL: My top two are Miami and Florida State. I love working with kids so I would consider being a teacher or go into athletic training.
KC: What is your greatest athletic accomplishment so far?
KL: I would say winning the indoor 200 meters at Meet of Champions.
KC: Do you play any other sports?
KL: I played field hockey my freshman and sophomore years.
KC: What grade school did you attend and what teacher had the biggest impact on you?
KL: I attended Oak Valley and all the teachers I had in the past impacted me in different ways. I never had a teacher I didn’t like.
KC: What is your favorite subject at Deptford?
KL: I like math and I like English because I like writing.
KC: What is your favorite food in the cafeteria?
KL: I usually don’t eat in school, but chicken quesadilla when I do.
KC: Who is your funniest teammate?
KL: Vavrina Clement, she is a freshman, she always lightens the mood.
KC: What is your favorite social media outlet?
KL: I like mainly Twitter, it is kind of like a family and track trends a lot.
KC: Who is the most famous person to retweet you?
KL: Bianca Knight, she a professional track runner on the USA team.
KC: Does your coach, Kevin Sherry, drive a cool car and listen to cool music?
KL: My coach loves listening to Jamaican music.
KC: How has Coach Sherry helped you in your career?
KL: My brother (Kevin) ran for Deptford and that is how he got to know me and he always saw something in me. He made sure no matter how many times I failed, to get back up.
KC: Do your parents, Kevin and Fran, play sports and do they dress cool?
KL: My dad ran track and played football (Glassboro High School) and my mom ran track and played field hockey (West Deptford).
KC: How have your parents helped you the most in sports and in life?
KL: I thank them for keeping me motivated in sports.
KC: The Rolling Stones are touring again this summer, who listens to them more you or your parents?
KL: We listen to Gospel music around the house.
KC: What are your personal and team goals this season?
KL: I do want to run a mid-11 (100) and mid-23 (200). And team goals is to keep pushing hard because we had been down for many years. I love my team.
