Quinn Cook was very excited about Harry Giles' transfer to Oak Hill Academy

By

As news spread that top overall hoops recruit Harry Giles III would spend his senior season at Virginia’s Oak Hill Academy — as reported here first by colleague Jason Jordan — plaudits and excited predictions came in from far and wide. Yet none were more direct than the one shared by former Oak Hill and Duke guard Quinn Cook, who was apparently alerted to the news by Giles himself.

Forget for a moment the actual text message stream back and forth, which includes an epic, “uh ohhhhhhhhhhhh” with 12 “h’s”. Just focus on the message Cook appended to it on Instagram:

So my lil bro @bigticket_hg just sent me this!! I’m hype!! Oak Hill baby!! Harry will be the next great one to come out of The Hill! Congrats again lil brah!! Go get you a ring! RiP DAD!

Aside from the “RiP DAD” coda, which Cook uses to sign off every photo message, this is one long, very excitable screed about Oak Hill. And Cook has every right to be very excited. His alma mater just landed the recruit of the year, if not multiple years, and he should put legendary Oak Hill coach Steve Smith in pole position to capture the DICK’S Nationals title come next April.

Of course, plenty has to happen before then, Giles maintaining his health not least among them. Yet Cook and all Oak Hill fans have plenty to be excited about. That a defending national champion and forthcoming NBA rookie would go to this length to sing the praises of a high school senior and his alma mater only speaks to the scholastic ties that bind, even when players aren’t there for a full four years.
