Two coaches hoping that recent surges are a sign of things to come meet Friday night at Bill Dotson Stadium when the two-time state champion Acadiana Wreckin’ Rams await the Northside Vikings.
For Acadiana coach Ted Davidson, the big upgrade came from the first to the second half in last Friday’s 27-6 jamboree win over Cecilia.
“We shot ourselves in the foot in the first half,” Davidson said. “Overall, I’m pretty pleased with the progress. We’ve been executing pretty well in practice. As long as we’re not dropping snaps, we can move the ball.”
For Northside coach Trev Faulk, his Vikings delivered a much more complete effort in the 12-6 jamboree win over Jennings than they did in the scrimmage.
For the Vikings, the big shoes to fill were Markaylon Boyd taking over for Ethan Rose.
“He’s doing well,” Faulk said. “He’s a leader on the field and on campus. He’s an honor student. He’s one of those kids who is there early and stays late. The kids respect him.
“We were able to take a couple of deep shots against Jennings and we’re going to continue to do that.”
The bad news for the Vikings is that running back Braylon Constantine is out until at least week 3 with an ankle. In his place, Taveon Leary scored in the jamboree, as did receiver Mark Bonnet.
The Rams, meanwhile, will continue to monitor the progress of junior quarterback Myles Hutchinson, but certainly have discovered some potential at halfback.
Sophomore Ziggy Francis rushed for 63 yards on four carries, and safety Jayrin Wilson displayed how well he can help on offense with a short TD run and a 40-yard run to set up another score.
“We’re going to spot-play Jayrin, because he’s such a threat,” Davidson said. “He’s an amazing athlete.”
Davidson said he pleased with the progress of the offensive line, but that unit will have to be aware of Northside defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin.
“He’s really a force,” he said. “He’s really good. He can run and he’s physical.”
Meanwhile, the Rams expect to get defensive tackle Dylan Brown back from a camp injury.
